6 – L’Utilisation des Corpora

"Par exemple, j’ai rêvé d’une lettre, et aussi d’une funéraille ou de quelquechose de semblable; j’ai consulté une ‘livre de rêves’, et j’ai trouvé que le mot ‘lettre’ doit être traduit par le mot ‘contrariété’ et le mot funérailles par le mot ‘fiancailles’"¹.

1. Si «finer points» a une signification différente de celle que, trivialement, vous obtenez en ajoutant la signification de «fine» à la signification de «points»;
2. si c’est une collocation, par conséquent la position de «fine» près de «points» est particulièrement fréquente, au point qu’il devient incongru d’utiliser un synonyme simple en lieu des deux mots.

En premier lieu le traducteur consulte un dictionnaire monolingue et recherche la chaîne en son entier en recherche avancée. Le dictionnaire que j’ai utilisé pour ce test est l’American Heritage^® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, 2000. En y insérant la chaîne désirée, j’ai obtenu le résultat suivant :

Comme vous pouvez le constater, la recherche avancée était bien motivée : si j’avais fait la recherche sous l’entrée «fine» ou l’entrée «point», je n’aurais pas trouvé une telle combinaison de mot, puisqu’en recherchant les deux mots ensemble je n’obtiens qu’un seul résultat, l’entrèe «muscular», qui ne viendrait certainement pas à l’esprit spontanément.

En comparant la définition, dans laquelle le mot «subtlety» est utilisé, je peux commencer à supposer que les «finer points» ont quelquechose à voir avec la subtilité d’un sujet, mais je n’obtiens pas encore de réponse aux deux questions que je dois solutionner pour faire la traduction, en particulier la deuxième.

Puisque c’est un texte en Anglais Britannique, il me vient à l’esprit que le dictionnaire que j’ai utilisé n’est pas le plus approprié, puisqu’il s’agit d’un dictionnaire qui est spécifiquement identifié à l’Anglais Américain. J’initie alors la même investigation avec un autre dictionnaire, le Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/). J’obtiens alors les résultats suivants :
