De gedachte en de inhoud van de droom doen zich aan ons voor als twee voorstellingen van dezelfde inhoud in twee verschilende talen.
In de vorige les heb ik een vertaalprobleem onder de loep genomen dat geen betrekking had op de betekenis van afzonderlijke woorden, maar op de betekenis van een bijzondere combinatie, een collocatie van woorden als zodanig. En ik heb laten zien hoe nuttig het in dergelijke gevallen kan zijn om een corpus te raadplegen. Maar heeft de keuze voor een corpus nog wel zin wanneer het om andersoortige vertaalproblemen gaat?
In deze les zal ik proberen twee vertaalproblemen op te lossen die zich werkelijk hebben voorgedaan in dezelfde tekst als in de beide vorige lessen is gebruikt. Het gaat hierbij om de volgende zinnen:
I know I bang on about the English being strange, but clearly a little part of me isn't quite convinced, since I've sort of married two of them.
Bang on cue, Frank appears, wearing my rose-patterned Cath Kidston apron.
In beide gevallen komt, zoals ik door het gebruik van kleuren heb willen aangeven, de combinatie "bang on" voor, waarvan ik de betekenis niet ken. De eerste hyptohese die ik formuleer is dat het om een phrasal verb gaat, een van die werkwoorden die een bijzondere betekenis krijgen als men ze combineert met een bepaald voorzetsel, en waarop de Britten zo dol zijn (de Amerikanen maken er minder gebruik van en geven soms de voorkeur aan een woord met dezelfde betekenis maar van Latijnse herkomst).
Ik begin met Webster’s New World Dictionary van Macmillan, uit 1997, dat mij als resulstaat geeft dat de combinatie «bang on» niet bestaat. Ik leid daaruit af dat het waarschijnlijk om een Britse uitdrukking gaat. Ik ga verder met het Collins woordenboek van het Britse Engels, maar ook daar vind ik niets.
Pas als ik uiteindelijk zoek op de Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp?key=5831&dict=CALD) vind ik daar:
bang on phrasal verb INFORMAL DISAPPROVING to talk about something for a long time, especially in a way that is boring to other people: My parents are always banging on about how much better life was 20 years ago.
Op deze wijze lijkt het eerste van mijn beide problemen te zijn opgelost, doordat het voorbeeld dat mij wordt gegeven "bang on" bevat, gevolgd door een voorzetselbepaling ingeleid door "about", net als in mijn tekst. Dus kan een mogelijke vertaling van mijn eerste zin als volgt luiden:
Ik weet dat ik blijf hameren op het feit dat Engelsen vreemd zijn...
Ik controleer nu in het British National Corpus, waarbij ik "bang on" invoer, en krijg het volgende resultaat:

Ik heb in lichtgroen de gevallen aangegeven die mij in de buurt van mijn eerste zin lijken komen. Maar is die oplossing voor mijn tweede probleem te hanteren? Het lijkt me van niet. Daarna heb ik de gevallen die mij doen denken aan mijn tweede zin in paars aangegeven. Hierbij is me iets opgevallen: in één geval (het voorlaatste) komt de combinatie «bang on cue» precies zo als in mijn tekst voor, ook in dit geval aan het begin van de zin, en komt me voor als op het eerste gezicht niet makkelijk te begrijpen. In maar liefst vijf gevallen op twaalf vind ik "bang on target", wat bij mij een alarm doet afgaan: zou "bang on cue" een variant van of een intertextuele verwijzing zijn naar "bang on target"?
Verder merk ik op dat er gevallen zijn van "bang on time" waarvan de betekenis duidelijk is, en ongeveer de betekenis heeft van "op de seconde nauwkeurig". Men kan dan ook opmaken uit "bang on time" dat de uitdrukking teruggaat op het geluid van klokken, waardoor de stiptheid zodanig is dat ze in verband gebracht wordt met het slaan van de uren in een klokkentoren.
Ik probeer de sequenties aan een zoekmachine op te geven. Ik verkrijg 3440 gevallen van "bang on target", dat dus mag worden gezien als een standaarduitdrukking, en slechts 166 voor "bang on cue". Ik merk door bestudering van de verschillende gevallen dat de betekenis van "bang on target", die wellicht aan het militair taalgebruik is ontleend, ongeveer de betekenis heeft van "voltreffer op doel", want overdrachtelijk betekent de uitdrukking "bijzonder treffend", "net op het juiste moment", "precies op de beste manier". "Bang on cue" is waarschijnlijk een variant met een enigszins verschillende betekenis, omdat hierin de ruimtelijke metafoor van het "target" vervangen is door de beeldspraak van het vanzelfsprekende, van het semantische element.
De vertaling van mijn tweede zin heeft dus niets uit te staan met de phrasal verb uit de eerste zin (iets wat ik ben gaan beseffen door corpora te raadplegen, niet door in woordenboeken te zoeken), en kan min of meer als volgt luiden:
Om mijn verdenkingen te bevestigen verschijnt Frank, met mijn Cath Kidston schort met roze motieven om.
Ik geloof dat het op dit punt duidelijk is geworden hoe nuttig raadpleging van corpora is, ook voor het oplossen van problemen op het vlak van betekenis die niet direct standaardcollocaties betreffen.
